Is the Paddock the Place?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Concerns are being raised that the Council is swapping one unwanted scheme for another, with the suggestion that the Paddock be flattened to make way for the new bus station.
It was originally due to take the place of the Sir John Hawkins flyover. That plan is on hold, owing to the phenomenal protests earlier this year, and the fact that it was too far from the
shops: but is has not been ruled out.
Many residents appreciate the greenery the Paddock affords, and so the consultation may produce unwanted results for the Conservative Group.
Ward councillor Bill Esterson said,
“I am getting a feeling of déjà vu: another unpopular place for the bus station. The Paddock is well-loved, and I have been contacted by many residents who are horrified at this proposal and
will be making their views known.”
“I am also concerned about the consultation. I am glad that there is going to be one for once, but the timescale is incredibly short- people’s responses have to be in by the 18th.”
“The original plans for the Paddock were to ‘greatly enhance (it) to provide an attractive and useable civic space’. Getting the location of the bus station right is vital to the economic
well-being of the town and I just want the regeneration of Chatham to work, and to have the residents’ support.”
