No Help from
Council with replacement for Post Office services after
all
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
At last night’s council meeting, Cllr Bill Esterson asked the
Tory leader of the council the following question:
“Some months ago, the Leader of Medway Council promised to
investigate ways of providing a mobile post office in areas
affected by closures, and that he would be contacting the Post
Office to discuss this with them. Can he let the Council know what
progress has been made on this important matter?”
Cllr Chambers said that the promise had been made in a report to
members. He also told members of the council that he had taken no
action to investigate how to provide mobile postal services.
Cllr Esterson said, “It is disappointing for residents that the
council has not made any effort to find alternatives to the
services provided at the post offices which have recently closed.
When the Tory cabinet promised to discuss alternatives with the
post office, I thought it was a very positive suggestion. It seems
that the cabinet changed its mind about finding alternatives. All
we heard from Cllr Chambers last night was that it wasn’t his fault
so why should he do anything. This is hardly the response that
residents need from the council leader, especially when many people
relied on their local post office as a valuable community
service.”
Cllr Esterson worked closely with residents in Brompton to fight
the closure of the Brompton post office, including a petition to
council and a letter writing campaign which was supported by
residents, businesses, the universities, the Royal Engineers and
the local schools.
