The following is an update from Councillor Adam Price for his constituents in Gillingham on the situation concerning the Post Office and recent developments on the High Street.

Cllr Adam Price, Medway Labour and Cooperative Group representative for Gillingham North, said: “The Post Office have been consulting the public over their plans for a future post office in Gillingham. We understand the present franchise of the Post Office at WHSmith’s is coming to an end. Ward’s card shop and newsagent in the west end of Gillingham High Street (on the corner with Saxton Street) has been identified as the location for the new post office franchise.

“It is sad that Smiths are closing after having been present in the High Street for many years. This is probably due to more and more stationery, newspapers and magazines being delivered to people’s homes via the internet.

“In other news, there has been more of a cafe culture in the High Street following Covid which is to be welcomed.

“Britton House has also been opened by Kent and Medway Partnership Trust in the former Budgens and Coop mall (owned by Medway Council) as their new location for community mental health services.”
