Why Protest GP Closures?

There are so many good reasons for trying to prevent the loss of GP surgeries, ranging from familiarity of care for the elderly and other who need it, to ease of access for the infirm, to reducing pollution and improving physical and mental health by providing local services people can walk or take public transport to. In Medway we’ve seen a reduction in health services and this needs to stop, we must support good health within our communities by providing accessible comprehensive care that is easily available for all.

What Happened?

Medway Labour have been working with the community to protest against the proposed closure of two local GP surgeries; the Sunlight Centre in Gillingham, and the DMC Branch in Twydall. We organised public meeting which over 300 local residents attended.

We raised the issue at Overview and Scrutiny Committee , arguing that the closure comprises a significant change of provision for which the public should have been consulted. This resulted in the decision being postponed.

What Next?

We will continue to petition Medway Clinical Commissioning Group and ensure that they are aware of the views of residents, as well as negative impacts closing these surgeries will have on the community.
