Medway Labour Fighting to Keep UCA in Medway: Cllrs Maple and Johnson Meet Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Makhoul

Cllr Vince Maple, Leader of Medway Labour and Cooperative Group and Cllr Johnson, Medway Labour and Cooperative Group Spokesperson for Children’s Services met with Prof. Bashir Makhoul, Vice-Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts.  They discussed their concern about the proposed closure of the UCA Rochester Campus and options for retention of a UCA presence in Medway.

Medway Labour Children’s Services Spokes Clive Johnson said:

“It was a real pleasure to meet Prof. Makhoul.  We remain concerned about the implications of the proposal to close the Rochester campus and the loss of the UCA’s FE provision in Medway.  However, we are pleased to see that there may be options for retention of UCA presence within Medway and we are keen to support any measures taken to ensure those options are progressed.”

Medway Labour and Co-Operative Group Leader Vince Maple said:

“Our meeting was constructive and cordial.  We are keen to retain the many jobs and the vital skills education that the University for the Creative Arts provides in Medway and the FE provision that is so important for raising aspirations in our area.  We will continue our efforts to support the retention of a UCA presence in Medway.  I ask also, what is Medway Council doing to make sure the UCA is enabled to remain a key presence?”
