With less than 70 days to go until Brexit, Local Authorities all over the country (some much farther away from Dover than Medway) are preparing residents and business for its effects. However, Medway’s Conservative council have once again dismissed Medway Labour’s call to prepare residents and businesses for the likely impacts of Brexit.

A motion, submitted by Cllr Vince Maple, asked Medway’s Cabinet to prepare and publish a meaningful analysis of the threats and benefits of Brexit to Medway, with detailed action plans to cover the range of possible outcomes.

Cllr Vince Maple, Councillor for Chatham Central and Medway Labour Group Leader said, ‘With less than 70 days to go, the Conservative-run Medway council have once again refused to start planning for Medway’s future out of the EU, despite cross-party recommendations from a scrutiny committee.

‘Not only have the Medway Tories buried their head in the sand by failing to plan for Brexit, they have also failed to implement a Local Plan for Medway, which have left Medway vulnerable to piecemeal developments which do not have our best interests at their heart.

‘Cllr Jarrett and his party have proven that they are completely lacking in imagination and have no vision for Medway’s future.

‘By failing to prepare, Medway Tories are preparing to fail. Only Labour are willing and able to take back control of Medway’s future.’
