The Medway Labour and Co-operative Group have welcomed the announcement last week that a Labour government would help parents by providing free breakfast clubs for all primary school children.

Cllr Clive Johnson, Medway Labour and Co-operative Group Shadow Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said:

“Our children are our priority, and last week the Labour Party demonstrated they will build a future where children come first.

“As a local Labour Group, we’ve previously highlighted the effects the soaring costs of childcare are having on parents in the South East.  We have put the spotlight on Medway Conservatives who could have supported vulnerable families over the summer by funding free school meals provision but shamefully chose not to.

“This free breakfast club policy will support parents to work the jobs and hours they choose, and not be restricted by school drop-offs, saving money on the spiralling cost of childcare.”

Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson MP said:

“The evidence couldn’t be clearer: gaps in learning development, gaps in opportunities, open up early, so our solutions must start early too.

“We need a fresh vision of that education. One that looks to the future, not the past.

“Labour will build a modern childcare system. One that supports families from the end of parental leave through to the end of primary school.

“As the first step on that road, we will introduce breakfast clubs for every primary school child in England, driving up standards in maths, reading, and writing, and giving mams and dads choices.”
