Debenhams has won a High Court case allowing it to go ahead with plans to shut its least profitable stores, including the store in Chatham High Street.

The plans will result in a total of 22 store closures, putting 1200 jobs at risk.

Cllr Vince Maple, Leader of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group said, “Today’s confirmation that Chatham High Street will be losing one of its most iconic businesses in Debenhams is a huge blow for our community.

“It is absolutely critical that the staff get all the advice and support they need at this most difficult of times.  It is also very important for Chatham moving forward that this store is not left vacant for an excessive period of time in the same way the Trafalgar Centre has been left empty since 2014.”
