Cllr Mark Prenter took to the stage yesterday at TUC Congress 2019 to call for strong action on climate change and a just transition to a net zero carbon economy.

Cllr Mark Prenter, Councillor for Twydall said, ‘I am a train driver by trade so I’m incredibly proud to have represented ASLEF on this important issue.

‘For a long time climate change was seen as a matter of a trade-off between jobs and an abstract notion of a greener planet.

‘It’s now blindingly obvious that climate change will affect working people and the most vulnerable first, meaning that it is up to us as working people to stand up for ourselves and our planet.

‘Trade unions have made great progress in the fight against climate change, but there is always more to do. Fighting climate change means that the way we work will change, but our fight for fair pay, job security, and decent conditions will not.

‘Unions must put considerable time and resources into ensuring that working people are not left behind by the UKs transition to a low-carbon economy. Training, investment, and planning focussed on the communities that face the biggest threats to their industries must be at the heart of our strategy.

‘Climate change has been one of the free market’s biggest failures. Dealing with it must be one of the trade union movement’s biggest successes.’
