It was revealed this week that the Gender Pay Gap at Medway Council has increased by 2.30% in the last year, meaning the Gender Pay Gap at Medway Council now stands at 10.63%. The Gender Pay Gap for other Unitary Authorities stands at 7.4%, meaning Medway is lagging behind by almost 3%.

Cllr Naushabah Khan, Councillor for Gillingham South and Medway Labour Spokesperson for Housing said, ‘’I am deeply disappointed to see that not only has Medway Council’s gender pay gap gone up since last year, but that Conservative Councillors refused to record their dismay at the increase and to consider positive actions to tackle the gap going forward. I am disgusted that they are choosing to bury their heads in the sand, and ultimately failing to support some of our lowest paid council workers or to take the issue of equal pay seriously.’

The potentially discriminatory performance related pay system MedPay will now not be reviewed after Tory Councillors voted not to proceed with the proposed review.

Cllr Vince Maple, Councillor for Chatham Central and Medway Labour Leader said, ‘It is absolutely ludicrous that Tory Councillors have voted against having an independent review of the council’s performance related pay system – not least because they voted for a review the month before. For years the Medway Labour Group have raised concerns about the potential discrimination within this system.  We want to see hard working front line council staff being given the recognition they deserve.’
