It has unfortunately emerged today that Medway has failed to be longlisted as a candidate for the City of Culture in 2025.

Cllr Vince Maple, leader of the Medway Labour and Cooperative Group said: “This news is desperately disappointing. I want to thank everyone who has been involved in making the 2025 bid so positive and vibrant for Medway. I’m concerned that Medway has lost out on this City of Culture bid due to the Conservative government’s ‘levelling-up’ agenda and we may see further opportunities of this nature unfairly denied to the people of Medway.”

Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Labour and Cooperative Group Spokesperson for Regeneration, Culture and Environment added: “We supported the aspirations behind the City of Culture bid, but the unfortunate reality is that the Council haven’t done enough in order to preserve many valuable venues within Medway. The recent closure of the Huguenot Museum, the threat to the University of Creative Arts and the closure of Splashes have all undermined the case we were putting forward.”
