147 Nelson Road is a mental health resource centre working with the most severely mentally ill people in the community. Those who attend will commonly have experienced a serious mental health condition like bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorder and have spent significant period of time being related either in hospital on in the community.
At Nelson Road these patients are supported and re-enabled to become more independent again. The centre offers an individualised and varied programme of activities and life skills. Patients have a personalised development plan with agreed goals and work with staff to achieve them. Success rates are good, and those who attend the centre and their families value it highly. Medway Council are currently running a consultation to close the centre.
'I am disgusted that Medway Council are even considering closing this much loved and valuable facility. No other council funded service caters for patients who attend there.' Cllr Teresa Murray, Medway Labour & Co-op Shadow Portfolio Holder for Health
Cllr Teresa Murray, Medway Labour & Co-op Shadow Portfolio Holder for Health said, ‘I am disgusted that Medway Council are even considering closing this much loved and valuable facility. No other council funded service caters for patients who attend there, and they will be expected to try to find support in the private sector or the wider community.
‘Some of the most vulnerable people in our community are under threat of losing the only professional support available to keep them well. The Labour Group is opposing closure and engaging in the public consultation. I urge anyone who has used the centres, their friends and family to oppose the closure by taking part in the consultation.’
