Only the Mayor’s tiebreaking vote could rescue the crumbling Conservative administration from being defeated at the last Full Council. This was following on from a Medway Labour amendment that called for more financial transparency with our community around the building of Splashes.

Cllr Andy Stamp, Member for Gillingham North said:

“While we support the aspiration of rebuilding Splashes, Medway taxpayers deserve financial transparency from their local authority. There is still no indication of how this multi-million pound project will be paid for despite the Labour Group demanding honesty from the Conservatives when it comes to the financing of Splashes. Taxpayers deserve to know the truth.”

Cllr Vince Maple, Leader of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group said:

“The administration only managed to escape extra scrutiny due to the Mayor’s tie breaking vote. This was because a significant portion of Conservative councillors demonstrated their displeasure with the leadership of their own Group and refused to support this item.

“This is the first time in my 15 years as a councillor where an administration has had to rely on a Mayor’s tie breaking vote out of desperation. It’s clear to everyone that this is a dying Conservative administration in its last days.

“The Medway Labour and Co-operative Group are united in our resolve to win control of the Council next May and give the people of Medway the competent and cohesive local authority that they deserve.”
