The following is the reaction of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group to the news Boris Johnson will finally be resigning, an outcome which the Labour Party as a whole has been demanding for months.

Cllr Vince Maple, Leader of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group said:

“Tory MPs and Councillors sat on their hands while our country was wrecked by a corrupt Government, led by the liar in chief. All those who stood by Johnson are tainted by the stench of his unprincipled premiership.

“I’m certain the people in Medway  won’t forget his shameful political career – which  included wanting to build an airport on the River Medway, breaking the law and lying to the Queen. This is alongside the complete lack of a backbone of our local MPs and Tory Councillors when they failed to call on him to go. “

Cllr Teresa Murray, Deputy Leader of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group added:

“The Tory incompetence and chaos at Westminster has long been mimicked by the Conservatives currently controlling Medway Council. The fact we now have two lame duck Conservative leaders heading up both authorities when they’ve already pledged to resign is yet another similarity that the people of Medway will be worse off because of. It’s time for change at Westminster and Gun Wharf.”

Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party, said:

“The Conservatives have overseen 12 years of economic stagnation, declining public services and empty promises. We don’t need to change the Tory at the top – we need a proper change of government. We need a fresh start for Britain.”
