The Medway Labour and Co-operative Group have expressed their dismay that once again our area has been neglected by the Conservative government when it comes to levelling-up funding.

Cllr Naushabah Khan, Medway Labour and Co-operative Group Housing Spokesperson and Member for Gillingham South said:

“As Gillingham councillors we’ve been on the record as speaking out consistently about the urgent need for investment in our town. To find out that we’ve once again been overlooked by the Conservative government is disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising given their appalling track record when it comes to supporting Gillingham.”

Cllr Vince Maple, Leader of the Medway Labour and Co-operative Group said:

“We see that once again Medway has been let down by the Conservative government with no allocation of levelling up funding.  With key projects in Rochester and Gillingham ready to go to not be allocated funding, whilst Rishi Sunak’s own area gets £19 million shows that levelling up is nothing more than a phrase.  Sunak is on the record saying he has moved money away from deprived urban areas.  It shows that this May people should choose change and choose Labour.”

Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Labour and Co-operative Group Regeneration, Culture and Environment Spokesperson added:

“I am very disappointed, but not too surprised, to hear that we have not received any funding from the Government. In particular, our plans for Innovation Park Medway are going to be severely impacted by this decision. The economic benefits we were hoping for from this development are now in question. Medway has been let down by this government and by the current Tory administration and it’s time for change.”
